lullasherluck asked:

I realised something. They can't change the plot of the original Sherlock THAT much. So even though Mary is an assassin I don't think she'll "go away". What might happen is that they'll need her at some point and she can prove herself to be trustworthy? I think she can change, I hope she can. What do you think?

painlock answered:

Uhm I don’t really agree. I think she not only can’t change, she doesn’t even want to change. In “His last vow” it’s shown she tries to avoid the punishment for everything she’s done. From what we see on screen, it also doesn’t look like she regrets it, feels any remorse, anything. Of course people are different, but there are some psychological responses that humans share. One of them is said remorse. It’s just: if you’d killed another human being, you most certainly wouldn’t be able to be as calm and cold-blooded as Mary is. ‘Cause again: humanity is not meant to kill. We have “inner mechanisms”, so to say, that prevent us from killing other people. And if someone mentally sane murders, they don’t behave the way Mary does. It’s not my idea, it’s just the way we are. I honestly don’t think someone who feels no remorse whatsoever, who doesn’t regret murdering people at all, who shoots their spouse’s friend and their hand doesn’t even tremble can change.

Mary will probably end up leaving since she dies in the books. Moffatis might change things and keep her. But yeah in the original Sherlock, she dies. And John gets remarried a few times.

I don’t think Sherlock seemed that remorseful over shooting someone, John also didn’t seem that remorseful after killing someone. I like Mary and I want her to stay

Uhm Sherlock accepted the consequences of his actions and didn’t even say a word at his death sentence because that’s basically what his “undercover mission” means. And John killed a serial killer who tried to kill another person (that’s what John thought), I think it’s slightly different.

Keep in mind that she may not have known the full truth of what she was doing at the time, and when she realized what she was doing she “freelanced” out of anger, then disappeared. The US Government (speaking as an American) doesn’t necessarily tell their Ops operatives everything, so they get the result they want.
